Keep your Koi Pond Clean

Keeping you Koi pond clean is vital to the health of its residents and should be one of your top priorities. A clean pond will mean the difference between your Koi living a beautiful stress free life, or suffering .... until their untimely demise. The water in which your Koi live is not only where they eat, sleep, and feed, but it is also where they deficate. If you do not properly clean your pond, it is almost as if your Koi are living in their own feces.

The water in your pond should be clear enough to see the bottom. There should be no floating or suspended debris, and the Koi should be visible from pond side. If you are unable to see the bottom of your pond, then chances are your pond needs to be cleaned.

People that build koi ponds tend to take great pride in their pond, especially when constructing the beautiful landscape around it. It is very relaxing to pick out flowers that bloom into beautiful explosions of colors and have sentalizing smells that are unparalleled. No matter how beautiful the landscape around the pond is, a pond is not successful unless it can sustain fish. While ponds are designed to resemble a naturally occurring pond, you must remember that your Koi pond is basically an outdoor fish tank, and that it needs to be treated similarly.

Unlike natural water systems, fish tanks need a large amount of care. Biological Filtration systems are needed to keep water quality high with just the right amount of Bacteria. A low volume low suction pump system is needed to keep the water moving while not destroying vegetation or the fish!

Koi imbibe more food and therefore excrete more waster in controlled ponds. Pond owners must take care when feeding their Koi each week. Too much food produces too much waste, whether it comes from the Koi's digestion process, or the amount of uneaten food that settles to the pond bottom and spoils. It is important to vacuum the bottom out AT LEAST ONCE MONTHLY, and make sure all intake systems are clear and in working order.

Being outdoors, your KOI POND or "outdoor fish tank" faces problems that a normal indoor fish tank would never have to deal with (unless you have kids - and those of you that do have kids know what I am talking about!). Outdoor Debris can easily find its way into your pond. It is important to skim your pond as often as possible and NO LESS THAN ONCE PER MONTH.

No matter if you blame the Koi, yourself, your neighbor, or nature for the pond being dirty - it is important for you to clean it or your Koi's life is at stake. Even if your water quality is clear, a large amount of debris can cause your Koi stress. Stressed fish are more susceptible to disease and viruses - which lead to death.

Preventative measures like BIO BEAD FILTRATION can also increase the cleanliness of your pond without decreasing the proper bacteria levels.

Keeping your pond water moving is one way to help keep the water quality high. Moving water adds Oxygen, as well as preventing stagnation and debris concentration. There are many ways to accomplish this while adding serene components such as waterfalls, fountains, rock cascades and just plain multiple outlet pump filtration systems with bio beads.

Keep the amount of fish down. Start by buying smaller amounts of fish as spawning will cause you to have babies in the near future. The less fish, the less waste and ultimately the less cleaning involved.
